Dear Mr Michael Peters, Euronews CEO

We, as Members of the European Parliament, responsible by our mandate “for the protection and promotion of cultural and linguistic diversity” in the EU, urge you to take immediate action to save the Greek service of Euronews.

Since its launch in 2012, the Greek service of Euronews has been serving millions of Greek speakers in two member states of EU, Greece, Cyprus, and throughout Europe and the world, broadcasting all EU-funded Euronews programs in Greek. Despite its significant contribution, the management of Euronews decided to terminate the operation of the Greek service. The implementation of such a plan means that the Greek service of Euronews will be the first EU language service to be silenced and a Commission investment of almost ten years will be lost, while Euronews is still funded by the Commission.

Linguistic diversity is a fundamental value that is clearly stated in the EU’s Treaties. Article 3 of the Treaty on European Union (TEU) states that the Union ”shall respect its rich cultural and linguistic diversity”, while Article 165(1) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) specifies that the ”Union shall contribute to the development of quality education by encouraging cooperation between Member States […] while fully respecting cultural and linguistic diversity”.

Moreover, in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the EU (which was made legally binding by the Treaty of Lisbon), Article 21 prohibits discrimination on grounds of language, and Article 22 obliges the Union to respect linguistic diversity.

The EU’s motto ”united in diversity” refers among others to linguistic diversity, which is directly linked to the cultural diversity of the Union. Languages are, in fact, the most direct expression of ethnic cultures. This is also why the closure of the Greek Euronews is quite unacceptable. After all, Greek is the language where the name of Europe itself comes from.

To sum up, the termination of the Greek Euronews, or any other EU language, will be a decision against the principles of the EU. It will deprive Greek-speaking EU citizens of the opportunity to follow the news published on the Euronews website, and, obviously, this is discriminatory and unfair, while it hinders the equal co-existence of the 24 EU languages.

Hence, we urge you to intervene in order to end any plans aiming to close the Greek service of Euronews and safeguard its overall linguistic diversity in the future.

Since 2012, the Hellenic Euronews has been serving a plethora of Hellenes and Cypriots throughout Europe and the whole planet, broadcasting all Euronews programs in Hellenic. An episode of cacophony in the European democratic climate occurred: the archons of Euronews, in an epoch characterised by an acme of pseudo-media, when Euronews may be a tonic to orthological dialogue and to the European cosmopolitan utopia, they organise the catastrophe of the Hellenic Euronews tele-paper. This tactic has to be stigmatised and to receive an anathema at its genesis, so that neither the Hellenic nor any other ethnic Euronews service will be dynamited. In parallel, we criticise the idea that this may be a therapy to the economic problems of Euronews. Europe should eulogise its polyglossia, this is a basic thesis, in harmony with the democratic dogma and should be a telos high in our hierarchy.

We emphasise our agony on the theme of the Hellenic Euronews. Its catastrophe could generate an unfair strategy, against EU scopes.

Finally, in the latter paragraphs we use Hellenic phraseology, as a method to show that Hellenic is a protagonist in all European glossaries and ought to be regarded as a thesaurus, critical for the ethnic synergies that generate the synthesis in EU.
